Amorgos. Recreation and tours 2024

Description

Amorgos – the wonderful discoveries

Amorgos is the most eastern island of the Cyclades with majestic mountainous terrain and characteristic island scenery. Mountains, cliffs, plateaus and rugged deep bays on the southern coast are opposed to the picturesque scenery with beautiful beaches in the north. The highest peak of the island is Krikello (821 m above sea level). Important archaeological sites, Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, ancient chapels attest the long history of Amorgos.

A bit of history

Inhabited in prehistoric times, Amorgos was one of the main centers of the Cycladic civilization (3rd millennium BC). In ancient times, three towns - Arkesini, Minoa, Aigiali prospered on the island. During the Roman times Amorgos was a place of exile, and in the Byzantine period - an important pilgrimage destination thanks to the construction of the unique monastery of  Panagia Hozoviotissa on the rock.

Hora – the aroma of an ancient epoch

Hora is an administrative centre of the island and an absolutely charming white village with narrow streets, small squares and traditional churches. Most tourists come here usually in the evening to dine in one of its taverns or enjoy a refreshing cocktail with the accompaniment of traditional Greek music and songs. In Hora you will find both souvenir shops and typically Greek art shops with various handmade ceramics, jewellery and marble figurines.
