In 1555-1561 famous Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible ordered two Russian architects Barma and Postnik to build a Cathedral of Intercession (St. Basil Cathedral) on the Red Square to commemorate the victory over the khanate of Kazan. After the construction was finished Ivan the Terrible asked the architects if they could build a cathedral that would surpass St. Basil in beauty. After hearing a positive answer he ordered to blind them. In 1588 an annex over the tomb of Basil the fool for Christ was added to the structure. Kuskovo

The ensemble of Kuskovo was created according to the tastes and the rules of Russian nobility of the 18th century. Kuskovo used to be called “Summer residence of Count Sheremetev”. It was built for receptions, elegant assemblies, and celebrations. What is special about Kuskovo is that there have never been any radical rebuilding here so the palace and the estate have preserved the original style of the 18th century. The vast pond, the old palace surrounded with elegant railing, the umbrous alleys of centenary trees and the park pavilions create a singular and enchanting picture. The centre of the architectural composition is the palace that is all made of wood. The interior of these structures gives a clear a detailed picture of the Russian art of the 18th century. Kuskovo is also a museum of ceramics that has a rich collection of porcelain, Delft ware, majolica and artistic glassware of different epochs and countries.
