Being the 5th largest city of Greece, Larissa is an important economic, industrial and social center of the country with the population of 145000 of people. The city is located on both banks of the river Pineios , the second largest river in Greece , in the eastern part of the fertile Valley of Thessaly , at an altitude of 72 m above sea level.
A bit of History
The name Larissa is in origin a pre-Greek word for "fortress". There were many ancient Greek cities with this name. The name of Thessalian Larissa is first recorded in connection with the aristocratic Aleuadai family, which was influential throughout Greece. Larissa is thought to be the place where the famous Greek physician Hippocrates died.
