Description

Laconia: Home to the Spartans

Laconia is considered one of the best tourist destinations, due to its nature and rich history. Ancient temples and theaters, monasteries, castles, caves, national parks, mountain ranges and stunning beaches- these are just some of the attractions that will fascinate even the most hardened skeptics.

A Bit of History

In ancient Greece this was the principal region of the Spartan state. From the early-2nd century BC until 395 it was part of the Roman Empire. In the medieval period it formed part of the Byzantine Empire. With the exception of a 30-year interval of the Venetian rule, Laconia remained under the Ottoman control until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

Sparta

Sparta is the capital of Laconia Region. Sparta was a prominent city-state in Ancient Greece.  It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC. Sparta was unique for its social system and constitution, which completely focused on military training and excellence. Its inhabitants were classified as Spartiates (Spartan citizens, who enjoyed full rights), Mothakes (non-Spartan free men raised as Spartans), Perioikoi (freedmen), and Helots (state-owned serfs, enslaved non-Spartan local population).
