Description

Esztergom is a city in northern Hungary, located on the southern bank of the Danube. Here is the border between Hungary and Slovakia, and on the opposite bank of the river is the Slovak city Štúrovo.

It is the birthplace of the first and most famous king of Hungary - St. Stephen's, and also the first capital of the country, which is now referred as "Hungarian Vatican", and all because of the fact that in Esztergom is the biggest and most beautiful church in Hungary.



HISTORY

Esztergom has a very rich and eventful history, which gave him a beautiful cultural and religious heritage. At first, lands, where a modern Esztergom is now, were inhabited by Celts. Later, the Romans conquered this territory, laid the foundation of the city Salvio Mancio, which later came into the possession of the Germanic tribes. Hungarians got this area only in 896, and then Esztergom became  its greatest development, and raised several times.


ATTRACTIONS

The main attraction of the city is St. Adalbert's Basilica, which is distinguished by its unimaginable dimensions and majestic beauty. It is situated on Széchenyi Square. Every tourist who has visited this place swears that he did not see a huge church in all his life, and if you arrive in Esztergom, you will probably say the same thing.

Height of St. Adalbert's Basilica is more than 70 meters, and it can be seen from any part of the city. Her "highlight" is the world's biggest altarpiece, made on one large canvas.

Near the Basilica there is another attraction - Royal Palace of Arpad dynasty. At the palace is located City Museum of Esztergom, which is open all year round.

Other interesting sights of Esztergom: Castle Hill, Chapel Vizivarosh, Christianity Museum, residence of the Archbishop, the Church of St. Anne.
