Alexandrinsky Theater

The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater is the legendary Alexandrinsky Theater, the oldest national theater in Russia. It was established by the Decree of the Senate, signed by the daughter of Peter the Great, Empress Elizabeth on August 30, 1756 (the day of St. Alexander Nevsky). This theater is the mother of all Russian theaters and the date of its foundation is the birthday of Russian professional theater. Establishment of theater marked the beginning of a Russian state policy in the field of performing arts.

For two and a half centuries, the Russian State Drama Theater served as an attribute of the Russian statehood. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries it was the main imperial theater, which was managed by Russian emperors. Since 1832 the Russian State Drama Theater got a magnificent building in the heart of Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, designed by the great architect Carlo Rossi. This building was named Aleksandrinsky theater (in honor of the wife of Emperor Nicholas I, Alexandra) and since then the name Aleksandrinsky theater is inextricably linked with the history of the performing arts world. The unique complex of buildings with a five-tiered auditorium, a huge stage, ceremonial palace foyers, a magnificent façade, which became one of the emblems of the northern capital, is among the gems of world architecture registered by UNESCO.
