Bolshoi Drama Theater

Strolling along the Fontanka River in Saint Petersburg, you can see the majestic building of the Bolshoi Drama Theater, built by architect Fountain in the late 19th century.

Bolshoi Drama Theater is one of the first post-revolutionary theater, opened in 1919, and now it is considered one of the best theaters in Russia. Prior to 1992, the theater was named after Maxim Gorky, who was actively involved in the life of the theater. It got its present name in honor of a talented man, its artistic director Tovstonogov, who took over as chief director in 1956. His plays were major events in the theatrical life, amazing spectators with novelty and originality for over three decades.

Visiting the BDT in St. Petersburg, you can enjoy both classical productions and works by contemporary playwrights. Variety of repertoire, talented acting, directing and the ambience of the theater attract many fans of theatrical art of all ages both from among St. Petersburg residents and guests of the Northern capital.
