Mariinsky Theater

The Mariinsky Theater is one of the most famous and the largest opera and ballet theaters in Russia and in the world.

Over more than two centuries of its history, the Mariinsky Theater presented many great artists to the world: the outstanding bass served here, the founder of Russian performing opera school Osip Petrov. Such great singers as Feodor Chaliapin, Ivan Yershov, Medea and Nikolai Figner, Sofya Preobrazhenskaya.honed their skills and reached the heights of fame there. Such ballet dancers as Mathilde Kschessinska, Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Galina Ulanova, Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov were the stars of its stage. It was here that George Balanchine began his art career. Theater witnessed the heyday of brilliant decorators, such as Konstantin Korovin, Alexander Golovin, Alexander Benois, Simon Virsaladze, Fedor Fedorovsky.And many, many others.

The Mariinsky Theater counts down to 1783, when on July 12 was issued a decree approving the theater committee "to manage music and spectacles", and on October 5, Big Stone Theater was inaugurated on Carousel Square. The Theater gave a new name to the square, and now it is referred to as Theater Square.
