Island, Sung by Homer

It’s considered to be first mentioned in Homer's famous “Odyssey” (known also as Scherie) as the home of the Phaeacians. But Corfu has more to it. Here you can touch the miracle, get to know the history of the island and take a look at the houses of celebrities.
The island of Corfu is one of the most famous and beautiful islands of the Ionian Sea in Greece, known worldwide for its natural beauty - exotic beaches, turquoise waters, olive and orange groves and green forests and rich history dating back to the ancient times. Kerkyra, as the Greeks call the island, fascinates with its Venetian aura, nesting in picturesque villages, narrow lanes and unique architecture.

Year after year royal persons, pop stars, actors, celebrities and nature lovers from all over the world plan their holidays in Corfu. In the 19th century Empress Elizabeth of Austria (Sissi) ordered to build a palace in Corfu and named it the Achilleion in honour of the ancient Greek hero Achilleios. The summer home of Empress Sissi is now a popular tourist attraction.
In1864 King George I of Greece made the Palace of Mon Repos in the Old Town of Corfu his summer residence. Now the palace is a museum and every visitor can admire the panoramic view over the Ionian Sea and enjoy the beautiful green garden, which is considered to be one of the best in Europe.
In modern Corfu the royalty share the island with the rich and famous. On the northern coast of Corfu, which is also called “Monaco of Greece” you can see among others the estate of Nathaniel Rotschild and a holiday home of Bruce Willis.
